Winter Driving Safety

Now that we are in November, winter driving season will be upon us soon. This brings the potential for hazardous driving conditions including ice, snow and poor visibility. Drivers are required to adjust their driving to the conditions. In winter, this means slowing down and leaving extra space if the roads are slippery or visibility is poor. Drivers are also required to clear their windshields and side windows of snow and ice to ensure full visibility. When conditions are treacherous, drivers may need to stay off the roads entirely until the weather improves and road authorities have an opportunity to clear the roads. Failing to do so can result in an accident and, in the event of injuries, a lawsuit for personal injury.

Snow tires are not mandatory in Ontario. They are, however, recommended, and you can often receive a discount on your car insurance for installing them. In the event of a lawsuit, failing to have winter tires may make it more likely than not that a driver will be found negligent for a car accident.
